4 Ways to Combat Soreness After a Workout

Working out intensively, for example, in the gym, big hikes, and long runs can be a fantastic way to get your body moving, burn calories, and build muscle. But when we are consistently working out and straining these muscles, it may cause soreness. This soreness can range in intensity from mild to severe. However, when the soreness is very severe, it can prohibit you from accomplishing normal tasks, such as walking up the stairs and bending down to grab something.

Even more, sometimes we become so sore that we are unable to go back to our scheduled workout the next day. To prevent these things from happening, here are some tips and tricks to help with soreness after an intense workout:

1. Bubble/Epsom Salt Baths

Baths are not only helpful for your mental health, allowing you to relax and unwind, but bubble and epsom salts are great for muscle recovery. The heat from the warm water gets the blood moving, and therefore working to ease the pain of sore muscles. The Epsom salt works to decrease inflammation in the body as well.

2. Utilize a Roller Foam

When you roll your muscles out against a foam roller, you are likely experiencing a myofascial release. The gentle pressure added to the muscles helps to eliminate scar tissue and soft tissue adhesion. You might notice that it “hurts so good,” to roll out your tight muscles, that is because you are most likely feeling the myofascial release in action.

3. Hydrate Consistently

Water helps the body in so many ways, and hydrating consistently can help the muscles recover after an intense workout. If you are not one for drinking plain water, you might want to add some sort of fruit to transform it, herbal, or coconut water would be a great idea. Dehydration might increase the time it takes for your muscles to recover.

4. Gentle Stretches

Stretching before and after a workout is important for your recovery and fitness longevity. Working out without doing either may result in pulled muscles or muscle cramping. Many athletes incorporate a stretching regimen, such as yoga, to help with recovery.

Taking care of our bodies by exercising is fantastic, but it also includes proper recovery practices. By adding some or all of these practices mentioned, you might notice a big decrease in muscle soreness, allowing you to get back to your workouts and perform as optimally as possible!
