What is the Raw Vegan Diet?

Have you ever heard of the Raw Diet, and interested in what it’s all about? The Raw Diet, also known as Raw Foodism or Raw Veganism, is a unique way of eating. Because of the unadulterated aspects of the food, it is claimed that this way of eating is the healthiest, clean form. However, as with all diets, there are some good and bad qualities. Here we talk about them both!

The Basics:

What exactly makes something compliant with the Raw Diet? Food that has never been heated above 104–118 F is considered to be raw. That means that most conventional ways of cooking are therefore obsolete, leaving you with the purest version of the food product. Although, juicing, blending, dehydrating, soaking, and sprouting is acceptable!

Most people who adopt the Raw Diet are also vegans, making any animal by-products non-compliant. Some examples of food:

  • Raw nuts
  • Fresh fruit
  • Fresh Vegetables
  • Raw grains and legumes
  • Seaweed
  • Cold-pressed oils
  • Fermented Foods

The Health Benefits:

1. Improved Heart Health

The majority of foods consumed are made of fruits of vegetables, which are linked to lowering blood pressure and protecting overall heart health.

2. Increased Energy

If you’ve ever tried freshly pressed juice, you will be able to recognize the energizing effects. This imparts due to the high amount of pure nutrients. Consuming an all raw diet may provide you with an increased energy feeling, as the food is not processed.

3. Aids in Digestion

Because of the high amount of fiber, coupled with eating a lot of fruits and vegetables, you may find that your digestion is improved. The insoluble fiber adds bulk to your stool and expedites the process of food moving through the gut.


The Health Risks:

1. Not Getting Enough Vitamins

If planning is not done ahead of time, and the food consumed is not as nutrient-dense, you may run the risk of becoming deficient in certain vitamins, such as Vitamin B12 which is a common one found in a vegan diet.

2. Potential Low Protein Intake

Although all foods have some assortment of protein, it is tougher to incorporate high amounts of protein in a vegan diet, especially a raw one at that. However, again if planned and researched, one can easily implement it into their diets such as nuts, and other raw protein sources.

3. The Risk of Tooth Decay

Eating an all raw diet may result in higher levels of tooth decay. This is impartially due to the high amount of sugar and acid found in some fruits. Berries, and citrus fruits, for example, may cause erosion to the teeth enamel.

No matter what, there are risks to trying new things, but you may find that implementing this diet works for you!
