3 Possible Side Effects of Dairy Over-Consumption

Growing up, perhaps you were told that you have to drink your milk, or you will not grow. Or, you may have heard that your bones will become brittle if you don’t drink at least a cup of milk every day. But is this true? Or is this something this billion-dollar industry leads us to believe for their monetary gain?

Dairy is hard for the human body to digest. Most infants and children are typically able to produce the enzyme lactase that lactose, making eating dairy easy. However, lactose intolerance is becoming more and more prevalent. Although we might not have that allergy growing up, as you get older, your body has a lesser ability to breakdown dairy, leaving you with some unpleasant side effects such as diarrhea and bloat.

So if the body struggles to break it down, perhaps it is indicative that we maybe should not be consuming it. Here are some other health side effects to keep in mind:

1. Inconclusive Data on Effects on Bone Quality and Health

There have been many claims that the main positive attribute to consuming dairy is for bone health. However, according to studies, there is no direct link from consuming dairy products to bone fractures or broken bones.

2. High Amounts of Saturated Fat

Eating excessive amounts of dairy is high in saturated fat and has the potential to drive up your cholesterol, which may lead to artery blockage. Because of this, experts suggest that you should only consume ten percent of your calories from saturated fat. Additionally, diets mainly composed of the combination of saturated fat, fat, and cholesterol may lead to heart disease.

3. Increased Acne and Decreased Skin Health

For those that struggle with skin conditions, consuming dairy may worsen it. Eliminating dairy consumption can improve your skin texture and tone. However, it may take a couple of weeks to allow your body time to adjust before you see any differences.

The over-consumption of dairy may lead to adverse side effects. After all, the milk is derived from cows to provide nutrients to their young calves, not for humans. While it has been proven that we don’t need dairy in order to be healthy, it may be something you want. If you find that dairy is something that enhances your life, or if you feel good consuming it without stomach issues, perhaps it does feel natural for you.
