Why Regular Cardio Exercise is Important
Why is cardio an important factor in maintaining good health? The purpose is to increase the heart rate to improve circulation and increase metabolism. The benefits of this are far ranging, but you need not be a super athlete to achieve this. If you find an exercise that fits your life style, such as walking or swimming, you can keep yourself in good cardio shape, and enjoy yourself at the same time.
Cardiovascular exercise increases endurance. This, in turn, strengthens your heart and lung capacity. When this occurs, your metabolism increases with it. That causes your body to burn calories more efficiently. This is also a great way to reduce stress – by burning off some steam as the saying goes. This doesn’t mean you have to all of a sudden become a marathon runner. A brisk walk will achieve the same results. Any type of activity can help, so choose what’s right for you and stick with it.
Go for a Swim
Swimming can be an excellent source of cardiovascular exercise. Swimming works every muscle in your body as well as your heart and lungs, while having little to no impact on your spine and joints, like running can. A good cardio routine speeds up your metabolism, which reduces body fat and burns more calories. Cardio exercises improve your Body Mass Index (BMI), which means it reduces the overall fat amount in the body. It also helps to control blood pressure by improving circulation, which is important for maintaining good health.
Count your Steps
Even if you seem to be stuck in a mostly sedentary lifestyle and just don’t know where to start, there are some simple ways to get yourself going. When you go shopping, instead of looking for a spot close to the store, park further away and get a brisk walk in. You could argue that you’re going to walk in the store anyway so what’s the difference? The difference is getting in an extra hundred steps which may not sound like much but can add up in a day. There are a variety of smart phone apps which can keep track of your daily steps to help you.
Go the Extra Mile!
Most smart phones have a step tracking app, but if yours doesn’t, it’s easy enough to get one in the app store. These apps convert steps into miles, so you can see, just by walking around in your daily routine, how much you’ve actually walked. You may be surprised how it adds up. Walking is good for a lot of things, including extra blood flow and oxygen to the brain. It’s also a time you can be with your own thoughts, sort of like a meditation, but with exercise. Any way you look at it, having a Cardio routine can help improve your body, mind and maybe even your spirit.
