Why Daily Oral Hygiene is Important
Taking care of your teeth is not just about showing off your pearly whites. Oral hygiene can have an impact on your health for good or for ill. Dentists recommend brushing and flossing after every meal.

Even upon waking in the morning, you should at least rinse your mouth with a good germ-fighting mouthwash to clear any bacteria that may have accumulated during sleep. Getting or keeping yourself in the habit of good oral hygiene can help prevent gum disease, infections and increase the chances of you keeping your original teeth as you age. Medical research has found that poor oral hygiene can lead to a myriad of health issues including stroke, heart attack, early labor and hard to control diabetes because of the blood sugar fluctuations it can cause.
Your mouth is also a window to your overall health. Most health issues can be determined, or the first indicators at least recognized, by an examination of your mouth. That’s why doctors tell their patients to “open wide,” so they can examine the mouth as part of routine check-ups. Your saliva can also tell a lot about your overall health. Saliva is the front line for fighting infectious disease and can, in a healthy person, disable harmful bacteria as well as viruses. Your saliva can ward off organisms that cause the spread of everything from the common cold to HIV. Histatins are proteins contained in saliva which inhibits the growth of Candida, a naturally occurring fungus. Candida can, however, get out of control if they are weakened by infections and other illnesses, or an overall weak immune system.
Keep Your Teeth
So, aside from giving a person confidence, good oral hygiene habits also help to eliminate the risk of gum disease and tooth decay. These are the leading causes of people needing implants or dentures as they age. It’s recommended to visit your dentist regularly – at least twice a year for cleanings and exams. Brush at least twice per day and floss and rinse in between brushing to keep your mouth free from food particles which can lead to bacterial growth and germs harboring in your gums.
Teach Your Children
It’s also important to take care of your teeth, and that of your children, from an early age. Getting kids in the habit of brushing and rinsing can help ensure a healthy mouth for a lifetime. Also, avoiding sugar is the best way to prevent tooth decay. At least keep it to a minimum and be sure to rinse well afterwards if you can’t brush immediately.
