Benefits of Drinking Enough Water Throughout the Day
It’s common to hear you should drink 8 glasses of water a day. Most of us have heard this advice from health experts at one time or another. The reason is, water is necessary for our bodies to function properly. Our bodies begin to lose hydration through sweat and can reduce proper functions with just 2% of water loss. That’s why athletes always re-hydrate after their particular activity and why beverages like sports drinks were created.
Essential for Body Functions
Our cells require water, and the nutrients in water such as minerals, in order to function. Water helps essential nutrients and oxygen to be carried throughout the body to maintain health of the brain and organs. Water also helps to lubricate your body’s joints and tissues. If you’re not sure you’re drinking enough water, your urine can be an indicator. If it’s dark yellow to amber, that’s a sign of dehydration. If your urine is light in color, that can indicate healthy levels of hydration. Keep in mind, certain vitamin supplements and medications can also alter the color of your urine, so don’t be alarmed if you feel you are taking in enough fluids. Another way to tell if you’re dehydrated is to pinch the skin on your forearm. If it bounces back, that’s a good sign you’re properly hydrated. If it hesitates, you should try to increase your water intake.
Can Treat Headaches and Prevent Heat Stroke
Some studies have indicated keeping hydrated can treat or prevent headaches. If you’ve ever gotten a headache from being out in the sun too long, chances are you weren’t keeping hydrated. Not drinking enough water, especially when you’re active outdoors, can lead to heat exhaustion or even worse, heat stroke. So, it’s vitally important to keep hydrated to prevent this from happening at all. There’s no proof that water can cure a headache if there’s an underlying medical cause, but staying hydrated can minimize the severity and duration of the headache. Studies have also shown, drinking enough water can reduce constipation in people of all ages.
Prevent or Cure a Hangover
Anyone who has ever drank too much, more than likely knows the feeling of that pounding headache you wake up to the morning after. One way to prevent a hangover is to drink a glass of water in between each cocktail or alcoholic beverage you consume. Alcohol dehydrates the body, so if you keep rehydrating, you won’t reach the point of such dehydration, that you regret drinking the night before. That’s not to say, if you drink to excess, water is the cure all. It is to say, if you pace yourself, and consume water at the same time, you’ll minimize the effects of a hangover which can include fatigue, thirst, dry mouth and a headache. It’s also advised to drink some water before you go to bed to keep your body hydrated while at rest.
For someone trying to lose weight, water can be your best friend! Not only will it help boost your metabolism, it will lead to increased energy. Drinking a big glass of water about a half hour before a meal will also aid in not over eating. Oftentimes, people think they’re hungry, when their body is actually thirsty. By drinking water before a meal, you will feel full faster, and most likely eat less. A recent study found people who drank at least one large glass of water before their meals had a 44% greater success rate at losing weight than those who did not. So, be sure to keep hydrated every day. It’s important for maintaining good health and wellness overall.
